As a child, one of my favorites things about summer was having the luxury to read, and read, and read. Now, each summer I give my kids a reading list, and I make sure they have plenty of time to delve into their books and get lost in a story. Here is a list I compiled many years ago for my oldest daughter, now updated for my youngest girl to enjoy.
Fairy Tales and Fantasy – All children should read fairy tales, which develop one’s moral compass and fill the imagination with wonderful stories. Raggedy Ann is just plain lovable. The Wizard of Oz is the first in a series of fifteen fantasy books. My personal favorite in the series was book 4, Ozma of Oz. Faraway Tree Stories was much loved by my kids.

Grimm’s Fairy Tales

Pioneer Days – We all know and love the Little House on the Prairie books. Here are the first books in three more series about pioneer days. First Farm in the Valley is the first of five books about a Catholic Polish family. Happy Little Family is the first of four. Little House on Rocky Ridge is the first of eight.

Notable Women in History – The Childhood of Famous American series are simply wonderful.

Realistic stories about girls – Each of these books are the first in a delightful series. The heroines are mostly sweet and innocent. Pippi is a hilarious handful. Ramona is a pest, but she’ll make your girls laugh. My youngest daughter’s favorite is All-of-a-Kind Family.

Catholic books – because we always want to include some saint stories in our summer reading!

Hope you find something here your girls will enjoy!
