Here’s a FREE book for poems for first grade that I compiled for my son with Down Syndrome. All my children have copied, memorized, and recited poems throughout their homeschooling years. So I certainly wasn’t going to let my youngest off the hook just because he has T21! Especially because memorizing and reciting poetry is so great for developing memory skills and working on articulation and pacing in speech. But most importantly, poetry fills the mind with beautiful imagery.
While there are so many poetry anthologies with lovely illustrations, they all have such small fonts. My son needs text in large print. So, I made him this book:

Large font, bright pictures, and rhyming poems with repetitive text and strong rhythm.

While I was at it, I included exercises for circling the rhyming words:

Filling in the missing words is also included: (My son tells me the missing word and I write it in.)

Each poem is accompanied by simple copy work:

I included a variety of poems: short ones, long ones, funny ones, lyrical ones, etc.
