Once again, it’s a First Holy Communion Year for us, which makes spring an even more joyful time. Probably, many of you will be attending First Communion Masses, too. So, here’s a list of books and gifts I think your first communicants will appreciate:
- Holy Gospels of St. Luke and St. John – Sacred Art Series
Here are the Gospels of St. Luke and St. John resplendent with beautiful art masterpieces and in a large, readable font for children.
2. Golden Children’s Bible
This is our favorite children’s bible. The language is easy to understand while still retaining a tone that is reverent. There are large, vivid, and realistic illustrations on every page.
3. Along the Paths of the Gospels Saint Stories Set
Here’s a collection of four little books about St. Colette, St. Vincent de Paul, St. Catherine Laboure, and St. Angela Merici. The stories are sweet and the illustrations are charming.
4. Around the Year Saints Once Upon a Time Saints
Ethel Pochocki’s story telling style is both humorous and endearing.
5. Our Lady of Fatima Graphic Novel
All Catholic children should know the story of Fatima, which should help them develop a devotion to Our Lady and impress upon them that even children can be saints. I’m usually not a fan of graphic novels, but this (and a few others) is an exception. The illustrations are excellent, as is the written content.
6. The Rosary in Art for Children and a Rosary
Talking about Our Lady, I wrote this little book to help my kids meditate on the mysteries of the rosary. This, along with a beautiful rosary, would make a great First Communion gift. Or, you can pair it with a similar book, The Stations of the Cross for Children.
7. Bl. Patron Saint of First Communicants: The Story of Blessed Imelda Lambertini
This is the sweet, charming story of Blessed Imelda, who longed to receive Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist. This is a chapter book, so it’s more appropriate for advanced readers unless you read it aloud to your son/daughter.
8. The Dauntless Christian
My daughter wrote this fast-paced easy chapter/picture book. The young early Christian martyrs – Sts. Sebastian, Tarcicius, Quadratus, and Agnes – are so courageous and heroic.
9. Child-size Scapular and Scapular booklet
Now is a good time to introduce to your child the devotion of wearing a scapular.
10. Personalized First Communion Picture Frame
I wish I had one of these for each of my children to make their First Communion Days even more memorable.
I hope you find some of these gift ideas useful. What are some of your children’s favorite First Communion gifts?
Wonderful – thanks Marylou!
