As many of you know, I’ve been teaching Junior to read using Down Syndrome Education’s See and Learn series. Teaching Junior to read has been one of the most gratifying experiences in all my years of homeschooling because he is so eager to learn. One of the things that keeps him motivated is getting to read new books. Every time I bring home a big bag of new books from the library it’s like Christmas… he’s that excited. Then Junior sits on the floor and digs into the bag, happily flipping through each of the books and lining them up neatly as he finishes each one.

To keep him motivated and to give him continual review of previously learned words, I make him books using the words he has learned from See and Learn and from the Faith and Freedom Primer.

A few posts ago, I shared some books I made to go with See and Learn Phrases 1 and 2. Here are ten free books to supplement See and Learn Phrases 2 and 3.

No, Monkey, No and Yes, Monkey, Yes can be taught after See and Learn Phrases 2. These books are also useful for teaching your children about the suffix -ing.

Look What I See is a book about counting how many legs different animals have. This also supplements See and Learn Phrases 2.

I wrote Mommy, Mommy, and Daddy, Daddy to give Junior practice expressing his wants and needs, such as “I want a snack,” “I want milk,” and “Play outside”. Many of the words in these books are taught in the Faith and Freedom Primer.

Junior loves playing with other children, but he is still learning to use words to invite children to play. So I wrote this social story to help him learn about Making Friends. I have a boy version and a girl version. This uses words from See and Learn Phrases 3.

The next three books are supplements for See and Learn Phrases 3. In I Went to the Zoo, I added picture cards for animals that were not taught in See and Learn Phrases.

I hope your kids will enjoy these books as much as Junior has. After he reads one of these books, I put it in a book rotation, so we often come back to it for review. Once a book is mastered, I leave it on his book shelf for him to enjoy on his own.

You might have noticed and SL2 or SL3 in small letters at the right-hand bottom corner of the title pages.

SL2 means the book is appropriate for reading while or after your child has learned the words in See and Learn Phrases 2.

SL3 means the book is appropriate for reading while or after your child has learned the words in See and Learn Phrases 3.

Junior is now working through See and Learn Sentences 1, which is a huge kit. And, yes, I’ve been making supplementary books for that kit, too… so stay posted!
