I’m so excited to share the news about a newly released podcast: Get Down to It! by Tara Boogaerts. In two episodes I talk to her about the Homeschooling Option for Children with Down Syndrome and Teaching Reading and Learning Phonics.
The Get Down to It Podcast is about “Connecting the Down syndrome community with persons who live with, educate and assist individuals with Down syndrome. We will enter home life, places of education, parishes and other settings that offer services and activities that support the inherent dignity of persons with Down syndrome.” — Tara Boogaerts.
Personally, I love hearing about other families that have children with Down Syndrome or other special needs. So I hope you’ll a chance to listen in on some of the episodes and be inspired and encouraged.

Hi Mercy for Marthas,I really enjoy your blogs, things you share. I homeschooled my ds 16 year old son, but could not keep him busy enough and I gave into his carb and video demands. He did make progress though.I love your materials. I am so thankful you share themDo you really think DS can learn phonics? So many of his old teachers only teach sight words. I have two ds sons, ages 22 and 16. What is the easiest to use, big print, best phonics for really slow ds learners (and MOM)Thank you,Jeanne
Yes I do think many children and adults with DS can learn phonics! If your sons know about 100 sight words and the letters of the alphabet and their sounds, try out my phonics workbook: First Steps with Phonics.
