Here’s a FREE reading comprehension workbook about the lives of saints for students in grades 2-4. Now that my son has learned to read, he is reading to learn. A reading comprehension workbook is a perfect way to combine religion and reading.
I wrote it with the differentiated classroom in mind: the large font makes it accessible to most students, large colorful pictures aid interest and comprehension, and the variety of activities allow teachers to choose what’s best for their students.
As more and more Catholic schools adopt inclusion programs for students with special needs, more and more teachers need curricula that can work for a variety of learners. So when I make resources for my son and the kids in our co-op, I try to include different levels of learning.
If you’re a home school mom, this workbook also allows you to cover the same material with different ages.
This workbook can be used for children in grades 2-4 with various levels of comprehension and writing activities.
Here’s the table of contents. There is one saint per month from September to June, with March and May having two saints. (We just HAVE to celebrate both St. Patrick and St. Joseph in March. And I couldn’t decide between The Children of Fatima and St. Dominic Savio, so I did both. I thought it was important to include St. Dominic Savio because kids need to know that even ordinary kids can become saints!)
For each saint, there is a biographical passage and a vocabulary sheet with illustrated explanations of unfamiliar words:
Next, students can complete a multiple-choice and/or a short-answer reading comprehension worksheet.
Narration pages follow. Students dictate a few sentences about what they have just read. The teacher/aide writes it down. Then, the student copies it onto the worksheet. Advanced students can write their own summaries.
Finally, a coloring page, for that four-year old who wants her own worksheet, too, or for older kids who enjoy coloring:
